    If you are going to West Texas, you would get some really great shots at Waco Tanks (although it is a state park) but you can actually fly outside of the park boundary on the west side and get very close to the massive boulders, sitting in the desert. This is about 25 miles east from El Paso (where I grew up)...

    Also, Monahans Sand Hills State Park has some beautiful scenic areas just outside of the park that are pristine and well lit this time of year when the sun is low in the south during winter. Last, the mountains running through El Paso.
