I understand that it's for obstacle avoidance. My understanding, however, is that it creates a temporary map of the layout. That way, if the drone is flying sideways as opposed to forward facing, it will automatically steer around to keep you in frame while simultaneously avoiding obstacles...

I know this is real late... But I'm new here. The light on your realsense module is an infrared light. I'm assuming you mean the really faint one in between the cameras? Ya. If you look at it with NVGs, you'll get blinded haha. It's obviously part of the 3d positioning software. Tl;dr: it's IR...
