GLONAS is the Russian equivalent to the American GPS system. Both are known as GPS systems, it's just that the Arerican GPS system is called GPS.

GLONAS GPS uses 24 satellites and American GPS uses more (I can't remember off the top of my head how many but it is in the 30s.

The European system with, I think 24 sats with 6 live spares was supposed to go live in 2015 but has been delayed and will probably not now go live until 2020
