Just a heads-up for you guys in the USA.

Eglin AFB will be testing new systems to jam GPS signals over the SE US the next 2 weeks. Anyone using a GPS including UAV operators should be aware and understand how to fully pilot their systems in non-GPS modes.

The official Flight Advisory can be found below or by clicking here.

FLIGHT ADVISORY –GPS INTERFERENCE TESTING

GPS testing is scheduled as follows and may result in unreliable or unavailable GPS signal.

  1. Location: Centered at 303251N0863904W or the CEW VORTAC 178 degree radial at 17NM.
  2. Dates and times:
  3. Duration: Each event may last the entire requested period.
  4. NOTAM INFO: NAV (GAFC GPS 17-05) GPS (INCLUDING WAAS, GBAS, AND ADS-B) MAY NOT BE AVBL WIA 349NM RADIUS CENTERED AT 303251N0863904W (CEW 178017) FL400-UNL,

They did this over the west coast about a year ago. It will be a considerable issue for some.

I remember that, Pat.

We all need to be aware that GPS availability and signals are not a given like day and night, Sun and Moon. All drone owners who overly rely on GPS to make their craft a "piece of cake" to fly will, at some point in time, encounter trouble.

We need to practice, practice, practice flying with GPS off, with wind and without wind (starting with little wind of course).

These GPS "tests" are happening all the time. https://pilotweb.nas.faa.gov/PilotWeb/noticesAction.do?queryType=ALLGPS&formatType=DOMESTIC . If you look under ZMA MIAMI you'll find the Florida one but they are all over the US. Check with pilotweb.com before you fly and do a radius search using a nearby airport code. The coordinates they list as 352114N1163329W can be searched in Google Earth as 35.2114, -116.3329 . Then use the ruler in Google Earth set to nautical miles to see what altitudes may be affected in your area. Altitude is AGL (above ground level). The dates and times are listed as 1706250300-1706251330 . 17 is year, 0625 is date, 0300 is time in Zulu. (subtract 7 hours for Pacific Time) etc.
