I was trying to "simulate" flight in my living room by leaving off the props and starting the motors as though it was flying. But every time, it gave me a message that I shold land immediately and it was going into 5 motor mode. The motors started randomly vibrating wildly. So I thought my mainboard was bad on the bird.

But then I decided to put on the props and tie down the drone so it couldn't actually fly. Problem went away!

What's the take away? The motors sense a load (duh) and when one isn't there, it assumes a prop is broken, hence the 5 motor mode message.

Just sharing a lesson to maybe help someone in the future!

Yes. This is normal, the motors want to feel the load of the props. If they don't the system will assume there is damaged or missing prop(s).
