I for the life of me cannot grasp the complexity of the actions of these two switches.
Would someone, in the know, kindly detail their operation?
Thank you.

For example, what settings to use for the gimbal in follow and watch me modes?
What position to set up in orbit to keep the cam looking at the st16?
(And - do we need SMART mode for any of those functions?)

I fly RC Heli's and do nose-in flight.

Left most switch... Gimbal Tilt control:

1) Upper position - Angle mode - Tilt limited in upper range
2) Lower position - Velocity mode - tilt can be adjusted fully
with wheel on bottom left side of the ST-16.

Middle switch... Gimbal Pan control:

1) Upper position - Follow mode - Pan locked
2) Middle position - Follow mode - Pan unlocked
3) Lower position - Global Mode

Pan wheel to the right of the Gimbal Pan switch

Controls panning... the further you turn from center, the faster the pan rate.

Smart mode is not needed for any of these controls...
however setting both switches to the lower position when
using the CCC mode, will set all gimbal controls to the
right stick. Up / down on the stick controls tilt and
left / right controls panning.

i gave the wrong advice , it was for the Q 500 , sorry .
fly safe

The left most switch I call the "speed" switch. It controls the maximum allowable elevation of the gimbal. The upper position limits how high the lens can be elevated. The high position should be used most of the time to prevent the camera angle getting high enough to see the props during maneuvering.

Middle position does little that I am sure of. Use only high and low just to be consistent in how you manipulate the switch.

Low position allows the lens to be elevated more. Use this position for high speed flight where the H tilts over more. Because of the increased tilt angle at high speed the lens has to be higher in order to see the area directly forward in the flight path. We will have propellers in view at the more elevated lens positions so we have to work harder with camera angles if we don't want props in the image during high speed activities.
