What are the differences in battery type profiles in smart chargers?

Hi,

my SkyRC Q200 and other chargers have special programs for various types of batteries - LiPo, LiHV, LiIo (the ones we are all surely familiar with), NiMH, NiCD, PB. My question is - are there any differences how these programs work, apart from different voltage values for full/empty/storage?

I heard somewhere about impulse charging and I started wondering how LiPos are charged and whether or not I can damage them by using a different program on my charger.
