I was in 1st grade and understood the President had been killed. It was many years later that the impact of that and the others in the song you quoted had more meaning.

I was in 5th... CA had secured the nomination for him just moments before... years later, even Nixon completely acknowledged that if he had lived, Bobby would have absolutely won.

For the wrong reasons. The Kennedy’s of that era were using sympathy for the assassination of John F. and his popularity as their springboard into office.

I saw a documentary on the TV a week or so ago about RFK. It portrayed him as a somewhat weak public speaker to begin with and in the early part of his election campaign, though his confidence was on the up as he progressed. The program may have been biased but it did leave the viewer with the impression that he was well in the running to win by the time he passed.
