Heathrow Airport installs anti-drone system that can locate UAV pilots
It will help enforce the five-kilometer drone no-fly zone around the airport.

The UK knows first-hand how disruptive drones can be to major airports. Last March, it introduced legislation to widen the drone no-fly zone around airports to five kilometers. Now, to enforce the new rules, London's Heathrow Airport has installed a system to detect and identify unauthorized UAVs.
The one-of-a-kind "Counter Drone" system was designed for Heathrow Airport by Operational Solutions Ltd, with help from manufacturers like Aveillant. In addition to detecting and tracking unauthorized drones, the system will locate the drone pilots, who can face up to five years in prison for flying in a UK Flight Restriction Zone without permission.......

Chasing Ghosts then. Since no evidence was ever substantiated, except one idiot flying in a field close by.
The amount of money and resources wasted on chasing a drone at Gatwick, which Police stated never existed, then quickly had to backtrack and say a lie and say there was one.
This could of been done without shouting from the rooftops, just a way of keep the negativity going.
It seems to come in cycles, just when everything goes quiet, yet more stories or hysteria surfaces.

At least we’re on our way to solving all illegal drone sighting issues over here. Well, at least for those who have a penchant for following rules when rules are in place.

May the force of many voices be with us, at least enough to have those voices heard and actually make a difference.

Looking forward to identifying bit, since most rouge users won't register. Will be interesting to see how that bit works, let's hope it works the you suggest and not as a mean to ban, because they over state illegal drone use, and therefore severe restriction or ban is only way forward.

Over a year after the Gatwick debacle now. And we're still waiting for the pictures of the 2 (yes 2 drones) that plod say they recovered. What a farce Gatwick was. Only credible video of a drone over Gatwick turned out to be a police DJI Phantom 3! Funny, all statements about that seem to have disappeared from social media, even though I remember seeing one with the chief constable confirming it! The Heathrow incident, wasn't a drone. It was a model aircraft. And the only reason he got caught was because he was flying in a field right next to the airport runway and line of sight with the airport police station! He got a 200 quid fine and a jolly good telling off from plod....

Does the UK have a different legal classification between a drone and model aircraft? Serious question as I honestly don’t know.

In the US drone/UAS covers all R/C aircraft.

No. Just stating the fact that it was a modal aircraft and not a drone. There is some angst between those who fly drones and those who fly model aircraft in the UK. With the model aircraft fraternity regarding drone operators as something nasty that you might get on your shoe..... Oh dear, set that cat right amongst those pigeons now!

Some Aircraft clubs won't allow drone users to join or use their facilities. All snobbish.

I can say, coming from a long history of R/C flight (46 years now), I also have a fair amount of animosity against MultiRotor operators who have ruined a lot of the fun of the hobby. With that being said, since about 2011 I've given in and lumped all of us into the same basket for simplicity's sake. Most legal bodies across the world have done the same thing.

It's the same on this side of the pond as well. My local club not only allows but embraces MultiRotor operators and has since they came on the scene. In fact one of our club members designed and built his own MR about 2 years before the Phantom series even came on the market. Initially it didn't have GPS and only minimal Gyro stabilization and it was a handful to just fly without crashing. If it weren't for improved stability and GPS modules this industry would probably never "taken off" (Pun intended). When you had to learn to fly before you could fly a MR it made the bar for entry much higher.
