New to drone piloting but not really.
Currently own six drones three of
which are Yuneec.
My two favorites are my typhoon h+
and my mantis.
When I originally purchased my
typhoon h+ I frantically assembled,
updated software and such, watched
two videos, tried to memorize instruction
booklet as I charged the batteries.
When fully charged I loaded em in
my pride and joy and flew my drone
until I had drained the six extra batteries
I purchased with it so I was forced to
stop for the day.
I had also bought a multi battery charger
so put my baby to rest and recharge.
Next day up at dawn, coffee, toast,
drone and equipment out to the front
and ready to FLY....!!!
WHAT A BUMMER...?
After 17 hours and 26 minutes I
crashed my baby from 300 feet,
THROUGH A MONSTER OAK TREE,
and hit the ground exploding into
so many pieces I could not find
approximately a third of it. ?
Jeepers I was so Upset,
and ADDICTED to drones......
Got into my truck, located my
nearest best buy with yuneec
drones IN STOCK...and drove the
63 miles in 49 minutes .!!
Got there and purchased
my SECOND typhoon h+ and a
mantis (to use for PRACTICE ).
Drove home an truthfully state
that I learned my lesson about
having skill and caution BEFORE
starting the fun and bad boy antics.
Well enough of my whining and
rambling chitchat.
Just wanted to give you folks an
idea of the latest chuckle head joining
the world of drone piloting.
Hope to be an active forum member,
poster, and maybe utilize you folks
on becoming a better pilot and mechanic.
So enough...
Yous all take care and stay safe.

Hey AH'1G,
Thanks for the welcome and advice about
reading the manual. But in the beginning
I was way too ""smart ": to read a manual.!
And that stupidity cost me $1,900.00 +
and me cashing my drone.
But I did learn.
Read the manual, viewed MANY of the
forum posts here to learn tricks, tips,
and from others experience and viewed
many videos to more educate myself.
Have gained a lot of wisdom and am
trying to raise my skills.
Am going to try night flying and about
to invest in a thermal cam so I can
utilize for both human and animal
locations.
Appreciate your post and welcome.

Hold back on the night flying until you get more proficient with the TH+. Also, when you do get around to night flying invest in a couple of strobes to enhance your situational awareness.

I have a permission from the CAA to conduct commercial night time operations but my permission specifically states that I must use strobes. It is possible to fix them to a TH in such a way that it doesn't effect any video or pictures if you position them carefully.
 
First Off, Can You Fly Drones At Night?
Yes, You absolutely can. As a hobbyist, You don’t need any license to fly your drone at night. You only have to follow some basic safety rules. These rules are published by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and will benefit you by staying away from problems with law enforcement and not losing or crashing your drone at night.


Rules for flying drones at night are:
  • Fly for hobby or recreational purposes only
  • Follow a community-based set of safety guidelines
  • Fly the UAS within visual line-of-sight
  • Give way to manned aircraft
  • Provide prior notification to the airport and air traffic control tower, if one is present when flying within 5 miles of an airport
  • Fly UAS that weigh no more than 55 lbs. unless certified by a community-based organization
 
Do I Need A License To Fly My Drone At Night For Commercial Purposes?
Yes, to legally operate a small UAS under Part 107, you will need to have remote pilot airman certificate. Or as another option, you need to have a supervisor who has such a certificate.
In order to qualify for such pilot certificate, You need to be at least 16 years old. There are two options for applying for the certificate:
  1. You can pass an aeronautical knowledge test at a knowledge testing center which has been FAA-approved
  2. When you already own a Part 61 pilot certificate, other than a student pilot certificate, you must have completed a flight test in recent 24 months and you must take a UAS online training course provided by the FAA.
Once you have your pilot certificate, you need to apply for a Night Waiver from FAA. In order to get your night waiver, follow these steps on the FAA website.

Pretty much the same in the U.K. as in your posts #8 and #9 above...particularly post #8. The difference lies with post #9. Here in the U.K. one must specify procedures in an Operations Manual for night time flying (if you intend to conduct such operations) and have it approved by the CAA. If procedures satisfy the CAA then they give a waver with the PfCO but categorically state in that waver that you follow Operations manual procedures exactly. One cannot get that waver unless, among other things, state that you will fly with strobes. Failure to mention strobes will result in the waver, and maybe even the whole PfCO, being withheld.
