Bad focus on 1080@120.

Hey all, anyone else out there notice that the focus is pretty off when shooting in 1080@120FPS? I shot a vid at 1080 and at 4k in the same time frame. The 4k looks good and sharp and the 1080 is blurry. I will add some samples later when I am front of the editing machine.
 
I've never tried 120 fps on the CGO3+, but the focus on the camera is fixed -- if the image is soft it is due to the bitrate being insufficient, or the encoder not being able to keep up.

You aren't the first to complain about the 120 fps footage either.
 
120fps is used for slow motion play back.
Yes, I was shooting my son riding his bike through some smoke bombs. Wanted slowmo for that. My Osmo did the shot perfectly, not so much on the H. Oh well, found a few other spots that said take it down a notch and it should look better. I will give that a shot.
 
Early versions of the firmware caused problems in 120fps footage - which version is your camera running?

When I last looked, 120fps was producing nice footage - can you share what you're seeing?
 
I did some testing yesterday and today comparing stills pulled from 3840x2160x30p and 1920x1080/120p videos and learned a couple of astonishing things. First, the field of view is much smaller when shooting at 120. Second, the resolution of the 1920/120p frame grab is slightly better that at 3840/30p when zoomed to the same size.

The first two images are full size frame grabs. Notice the difference in field of view. Unfortunately, I lost my white balance lock when changing video resolutions in the air so the color changes. The next two are zoomed in to the same field of view. Y071a is from 3840x2160x30p video, Y072a is from 1920x1080x120 video. Notice that Y072a has slightly higher resolution. Interesting!

Thanks for doing that, I have been so slammed I could not get my samples up. But what I shot and your examples it seems to be right on par. I was just hoping for a little sharper video.
 
Think about the amount of data that can be processed over a given period of time. 120fps provides much less time than 25, 30, or 60fps. That time delta could effectively narrow a field of view. The faster speed has to clip the image somehow.

I agree, though, that the 120 video looks pretty poor at full screen, compared with 4k.

Exactly. 120fps is at HD, wheras 4K (4 times the resolution) shoots at 30fps max (one quarter the frame rate)- effectively the same bandwidth. I hadn't noticed the side effect that 120fps uses a smaller area of the sensor, but it's not surprising. Using a smaller area of the sensor will affect how one pixel bleeds into the next - but you should be able to play around with sharpening in post to get the quality you want.

Theoretically the E90, which can shoot 4K at 60fps should be able to do 240fps at the lower resolution.
 
High speed cameras do the same thing. As frame rate increases image size decreases.
