Yes and there is also an tracking error when the ship is pointed east/west. Also there are Lay line errors in the magnetic field that occurs due to the metal ores in the earth and also gravitational variances too.
I still don't buy the computerized active filtering, just not enough computer on board. They have very well designed filters made with passive components for conducted and radiated fields.
These days they just plot a course turn on the GPS auto navigator and adjust the compass that way.
