Drone theft, not covered…

Hello, I wanted to give everyone a heads up about home owners insurance not covering the theft of drones. I had all my household goods in a mini storage unit when I was between homes in 2020. I had coverage on the storage unit with my home owners insurance policy. The storage unit was broken into and several things were stolen. I called my insurance company and had a police report confirming the theft. My insurance company was very helpful and covered all items but one… They covered the theft of Tools, musical instruments, artwork, pottery, and basically everything else. They also covered the theft of my model airplanes and all of the support equipment, Radios, flight boxes and parts, kits etc. no problem. But wait what about my stolen drones… No. ??? Model airplanes, Yes. Drones, No. I lost a Dji inspire, Yuneec Q500 and several batteries about $ 8-10k Ouch!

Thanks, Yes I did have an Inspire 1 Pro version with the hard case storage case and all the extra bells and whistles. The thief’s somehow missed my Typhoon H in the black backpack case so thankfully I still have that one. They did steal all the batteries for it as they were with all the Inspire and Q500 batteries in metal ammo boxes. Just be sure to check all the exclusions in your insurance policy. My insurance co. had drone coverage excluded in the Aircraft section of the policy. They didn’t care that the drones were only used for recreational purposes just like the model airplanes that they did cover. On a side note, I am a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and they did cover the drone theft, but their maximum payout per incident is $1000. It wasn’t even close to the cost of replacing the stolen Inspire and Q500 but they did promptly send me a check for that amount and that did make me feel much better!
