The FAA rule on this is 400ft. AGL, If you are on a 1000ft. cliff you can legally fly at 1400ft vertically (400 + 1000). Unless certain conditions prohibit (cloud cover, fog, etc.) you must stay 500ft. below cloud cover, and 400ft. horizontally, or out from the launch point.I changed mine since I often launch from the side of a ridge line.
I needed another 100 ft to clear the trees above.
I do have to remember to descend when flying over the valley below.
