The Q500 was a very popular aircraft. Many folks converted, and there are many, many ways to do it. Essentially, you have to create a path from the aftermarket battery terminals (commonly provided with MC3 connectors) to the positive and negative battery pads on the mainboards. Exactly how you proceed will depend on your soldering skills, tinkering skills, parts availability and desired maximum battery size. Here are some general ways to convert.
Inside battery frame:
Drawback: Takes up space in the battery compartment. The maximum possible battery dimensions must be reduced accordingly.)
1.) Use a Conversion Kit. An example can be seen at Yuneec Q500 Internal only Battery Adapter Conversion Kit | eBay .
2.) Use a simple extension. Leave the OEM EC3 connector in place. Make a cable extension with an EC3 female on one end to connect to the OEM connector and a male connector on the other end to match whatever connector comes with your battery.
Outside battery frame:
Drawback: Requires increased levels of tinkering (shell removal and minor shell modification) and more advanced soldering skills.
1.) Use the OEM connections to the mainboard: Dismount the OEM EC3 male connector from the battery frame. Make an EC3 cable extension as described above. Connect the extension to the OEM EC3 male. Route the extension OUTSIDE the battery compartment. Cut an opening for the cable above the battery wall to route the extension into the battery door area.
2.) Use a one-piece extension: Similar to the above, except remove the OEM EC3 and original cables completely. Solder the extension directly to the mainboard.
