What Google is doing with Android

Posted the link on my Facebook page. Why open source is getting scuttled makes no sense to me at all.

Google is going to block "side loading". This prevents distribution of apps outside of the Google Play store. It also makes it difficult for developers to operate outside of the Google ecosystem.

Slightly geeky rant follows... Ignore the rest if you're not a nerd.
I'm done with Android. My current phone is my last Android one. I'm hoping to get something running Linux but the Australian government is making that tricky. So maybe I'll get a dumb little candybar phone with hotspot capability and carry a small Linux tablet or laptop... Maybe even just PostmarketOS (Linux) on one of my old Android phones since I wouldn't need call/modem support....
It really annoys me that the people who allowed Android to exist commerically are now being forced away from it. We got mad at Microsoft for ruining Windows Mobile 6, and started pushing Android. I remember booting up the latest builds of Android 0.x on my HTC Touch Pro in bed to see how well it worked. I encouraged my dad to get a HTC Dream - the first Android commerically made device. I demoed dozens of Android devices to customers in the phone store I worked for. Convinced some to go Android instead of Apple... And now we have Google telling manufacturers to prevent us booting up anything that isn't blessed by them. No more custom ROMs. No more custom apps. No more rooting devices to get more out of them. They want total control. They want to force subscriptions to everything .
