Perhaps all the answers are found in the linked Forbes article. “Reading between the lines” seems to be telling us what government/aviation industry intentions are and airport “sightings” is a good way to accomplish the goals.

Funny thing, the guy that used to write all the drone stories for Forbes became one of the founders of AirMap.

The threat comes from those who don't read the rules and especially those who don't care.?

The ones that have hit the headlines in UK, probably never existed, now there claiming it was an inside knowledge, Just admit you made a mistake and stop looking for excuses.

As stated in what I consider the most important point of the whole article linked by @PatR, the very last line:

“As for drones that purposely want to interfere with aircraft, well, that’s another story.”

There’s certainly unthinking or lack of care people out there that are doing or will be doing unsafe things but the frequency of airports sightings lacking any proof to support the reports is on a rapid increase. Although drones don’t hang around very long they generally aren’t moving very fast so obtaining picture evidence of their presence is not that hard to achieve.

Many military bases employ radar than can track birds but we read and hear almost nothing of drone transgressions around military facilities. Then again, the public is not going ti become fearful for their personal safety when hearing of drones near military facilities. The public airport is a different story. By golly, that devil drone might crash into that jet airliner they will be riding in or delay the flight.

And very little they can do at the moment.

they cant admit it if they did there would be a lot of money to payout in compensation

If enough media outlets are publishing variations of the same story the public will believe them to be true, even if they are not.

The Forbes article is little more than an embellishment of another article written about 4-5 days ago by a different outlet.

The last flight I took, our plane had to stop in the middle of the runway; there were 7 drones trying to cross, and they took forever.
