One does not have to bind if the two bind on their own. Obviously, but there is a reason I state it: I have found that given a little patience, once in awhile the two will find each other without having to rebind.
Perhaps when you are not intending to fly, like when being a couch potato with lots of time, try turning on both and wait. You might find the combination (sequence of power up) that lets the auto-connect work.
I suspect there is a sequence, as sometimes I get mine to connect without a rebind, and sometimes not. But... I am not sure I follow the same sequence each time.
