Am I just a chancer? I find the easiest way to land is to fly down to about 5ft, hover, walk in close and reach in under the props and take a firm grip of the landing gear at the same time as pressing the red button. It works perfectly for me and looks very professional to any onlookers.

Yes. While it may work well for you, many pilots have managed to bump the left stick just as they are grabbing the leg. The results aren't pretty.
The method adopted by many Q pilots is to simply hover about 8" or so above the ground, press and hold the red button until the motors shut down. Makes a very nice landing.
