Doing a flight above an ancient Roman Road tomorrow

I've just been scoping out the ruins of an old mill in the Cheesden Valley which is just to the west of Ashworth Moor Reservoir on the A680 between Rochdale and Edenfield. This was just a swift site survey to see if it was viable to do; deciding on best take off points and whether I could park my car reasonably close to it. I didn't take an aircraft with me because the Kp index is too high today. It is do-able but I'll need to go on my motorbike since the only possibility of parking within walking distance is only suitable for a bike.

So, next time the weather is sympathetic to a fly I'm gonna do it. I don't know but I suspect the ruins are of a mill powered by a waterwheel dating from maybe the 16th or 17th century. Any footage I take from this flight I'll post in the videos section.

Do you mean Lumb Mill? I went there a couple of weeks ago. Sun was shining when I got there but half way through the first battery a hail storm decided to come and join us so I made a hasty retreat to Owld bets. I parked up at Owld Bets and walked across to the mill. Only takes 5-10mins.

Yes, Lumb Mill.
I was thinking of parking my m/bike near to the opening in the wall on Rochdale Rd that leads onto the footpath but I've just had another look at Google Earth and I agree that Owld Bets is probably better if I go in my car.

We'll have to get together sometime :)

BTW, thanks for the picture links.

Hi Snagg.
I managed to get to Lumb Mill yesterday and I had two flights around the site. I parked at Owld Bets and the walk to the site was fairly easy, but the return walk after the session I found hard (I'm nearly 62 y.o. and I walk with a walking stick).
I've posted a vid from the flight in the photos & video section, here Cheesden Lumb Lower Mill (ruins)

Yeah, the walk back was a killer for me. Hailstorm came in from the east and was blasting in my face! 5 mins earlier was glorious sunshine. If you look on my pics I posted you can just see the edge of the storm to the left.
Great vid, looks like you got a nice day. I bet the wind was still coming down the valley to cool you off. I don't think I've ever been up there without a 'cooling breeze' blowing lol.
I keep meaning to go up and have a fly round the quarry up there but I've not had chance yet. I'd need to get permissions sorted first for that one.

Actually quite light breeze for me: 2 to 4 MPH...I could have done with a stronger breeze to help cool me on my way back because when I got back to my car I was sweating like an old sow.

My legs are still aching more than 24 hours after. Now I know for sure that I'm un-fit. Last time I did a walk anything like that one was mid 2015 when I did some aerial photo surveys for a conservation group on Crompton Moor near to Shaw.

The quarry you mention. Is that the one over by the Eagle & Child pub near Shuttleworth?

Not sure, its just to the east of the windwarm at the top of the hill.

Dropped pin
near Ramsbottom, Bury

Google Maps

I noticed it when I hiked up to film at the windfarm (scouthead moor). It looks like it might be an interesting spot for a fly around.

Ah, I know the one. It's not the one I mentioned above. The one I mentioned is about 1.3 miles to the SE of the one you dropped a pin on. I was actually looking at that site on Google Earth a few days ago and I too thought it would be a nice place for a prop spin. I agree, though, you'll definitely need a permission to fly it.

The quarry is called Scout Moor Quarry and is operated by a company called Marshalls. I'll do some research in the next few days (I'm too tired now) to see if I can get a 'phone number to get a permission.
