Issue with controller

So went out yesterday and noticed the J4 control was sluggish and really didn't move the drone much and when it did it was slow, unlike forward and back and turning and altitude control which all worked fine. Today I went into the calibration and could not get the J4 to pass until I really worked the controls for a bit and then it started passing without an issue.

is my controller dying already or did it have a spec of dust stuck? I will be watching it for a while to see if it keeps working.

No it's not dying, these need to be cleaned from time to time. Use electronic spray cleaner .

Before each flight give your sticks a good "stir" to help keep them clean. While you are waiting for GPS to acquire sats, open hardware monitor and check your sticks.
