Advice needed about video quality

"As for the 4K versus 1080. in my opinion always shoot in 4K. if you want 1080 then convert it. Capturing more information is always best and you will get much cleaner 1080 footage of a 4K conversion than native 1080.

Of course if you want fast FPS etc.. you have to use 1080 native. If I have a choice I shoot in 4K."

Thats the thing tho, if only we had a 4k 30/60fps it would be perfect.

You CAN shoot in 4K at 30FPS. That is the standard. 1080 only for 60FPS.

From a film look perspective this is fine. You rarely want to shoot at 60FPS for video/movie shots. 60FPS looks very "video-ish." I like to shoot at 24FPS myself to get that film look. However there are indeed times that higher FPS is preferred if you want to slow it down. Otherwise no real need to go above 30.

4K@30FPS is not just a limitation of the Typhoon's camera though, most cameras that cost more than the entire H, like the GH4 and AS7II can't even do that. They also max out at 30FPS for 4K. 4K usually maxes out at 30FPS unless you get into much more expensive ones and they require special hard drives to record to.

So we are meeting the "norm" having 4K @30FPS.

Then maybe im getting confused because the max resolution on the camera (4096x2160 - that i would assume would be 4k) only has an option for 24/25p!?!

I too love to shoot in 24p but for some reason the playback is jerky - my video editor reports the framerate in the raw vido as 23.99 but the timeline is created as 24...so maybe that is why

I believe the H can handle: UHD 4K (3840 x 2160): 24p, 25p, 30p OR 4096 x 2160 (24/25p)
3,840 by 2,160 resolution is the most consistent number used by most UHD/4k HD TVs and monitors. It is exactly double the 1920x1080 HD standard. Just use that. :)

I believe FCP uses, or used to use, 23.98 (unsure why yours is saying 23.99) but that is actually wrong anyway. The real FPS is usually 23.976 which is sometimes referred to as 24FPS. 23.976 can be referred to as 24 but sometimes when a devices says it records in 24 it can be exactly 24FPS but that is usually for Europe and PAL based countries but not always. i:)i

A lot of times you shoot in 24FPS but edit in 23.976. I am unsure what the H records at exactly. Can get confusing., sorry. i:)i

23.976 is the broadcast standard and most video gets converted to 23.976 at some point. i:)i

You could try to convert your footage from 24 or 23.976 (whichever the H records at) to 23.98 (or 99 in your case?) for your FCP timeline. I personally use Adobe Premiere as it works with most resolutions seamlessly. Just my opinion of course. I think it is great to use whatever you like and just use what works for you.

Sorry I think I am just making this even more confusing. i:)i

Also maybe your computer can't handle 4K? Do you have any issues with other 4K footage?

No plays everything else fine. I know for sure its not my computer. Im 99% convinced its Final Cut but its what Im used to so I'm going to investigate more and report back. I won't use the highest res then - will stick to 3840x2160.

Have you seen how the picture mode (natural, gorgeous and raw) affects the bitrate - its bizarre!
