Pre-Flight check list for Typhoon H & H Plus

I suppose if it makes someone think twice about what they do and averts a problem, then it's worth it.

When I was doing my Operations Evaluation test to obtain my PfCO I had to show that I had a pre-flight checklist (and also an in-flight and post flight check lists) and demonstrate me using them to the examiner. Technically, I'm supposed to have these check lists with me when doing a commercial operation. I do, but I never take them out of my flight case and haven't done so since August 2016. It's all in memory now.

You’re not alone. A certain California utility absolutely requires operation teams perform complete crew briefings and pre-flight routines before conducting operations. Mandatory SOP. The high points of the crew brief have to be available for review for the duration of the day’s or location’s flight operation.

Normally we can remember to do the steps if a process, from take-off to groceries.
The problem is interruptions & distractions.

A check list is the very best way to prevent omissions. (Like starting the video record)

Interruptions to a preflight inspection are a very big deal. I could share a story about a $200,000.00 mistake (I made it) induced by a pre-launch checklist interruption but suffice to say the event was something that changed checklist procedures forever going forward.

If a checklist, printed, mental, whatever, gets interrupted, verify every line item prior to moving forward.

Forgetting to start video has happened with me on a few occasions and has happened quite recently to me. I had just finished doing a commercial job for a client using a P2V+ and while I was under PfCO exemptions I decided to put my TH in the air to take some video of the surrounding congested area (I had my TH with me as a back-up). My client was still with me and distracted me shortly before take off and, yes, I forgot to hit the record button. It didn't dawn on me that I hadn't taken video and it was a big deal because the opportunities to fly legally in that area are very rare.

Perhaps we could get it tattooed on our body, like the guy in "Prison Break". Then will never forget!

When you arrive at the flying site you don't want to spend too much time going through a lengthy check list so I have designed a quick and efficient pre-flight check list as per photo. The check list is for the important checks required for safe flying and the categories are color coded for quick reference and get you in the air safely to eliminate potential problems during flight. The pre-flight check list is also colored Fluro Yellow so it stands out in a case or backpack.View attachment 17339

Great card & better case. What brand of case is it & where did you find it?

Hi, I don't really know I checked but nothing on the case but I think it is HPRC. I bought it here in Sydney Australia with the H at the time. I have a HPRC and looks very much the same. Sorry can't be of more help. Cheers

Mental checklists are as effective as your focus, nothing beats written or digital to force that focus where it needs to be in my opinion.

Couple weeks ago the weather did a flip flop to calm winds and a broken sky sunset, in my haste to get some batteries charged and re-arrange the schedule, I forgot one minor thing that I discovered after driving five miles to the lake, and yes it's on the checklist I didn't pull out.

Hard to fly without rotors...

A quick drive back then! Police escort!

Only took one SD card once which was in the copter, it somehow got corrupted and that was it, a wasted journey, now I keep a couple spare.

If truth be known, I suspect that we have all forgotten something at some stage. For me it's forgetting to start video recording and yes, @PatR , I've forgotten props too. One time I was going to fly my Phantom and forgot my mobile 'phone.

On the forgetting to start video...only once did this become a problem on a commercial job since I didn't have another battery with me to re-do the shot...embarrassingly, I had to re-arrange the shoot with the client.. Other time I've had a spare battery.

Hi FlushVision, I agree with you I have also been in that situation and like you I use the check list when on a contract now. All pilots use check lists, I know it's a little more complicated but we should not be different as it does pay off. Cheers John

Can't count the times I've either forgot to hit record, discovered of course after that academy award winning flyover was finished and you went to stop recording to make sure it got saved. Or shut the drone off without stopping record...

A couple of years ago I was doing a job for a farmer (one of my regulars) and forgot to record. It was only after I landed that I realized I had no footage. Fortunately the farmer had gone off to do something elsewhere on his farm so I shoved a fresh battery in and got the footage I needed and he was non the wiser.

You prolly know this but if you shut the aircraft down without stopping recording then simply power up the H again and start a short video...a few seconds is all it takes. Doing that can fix the previous file 99% of the time.
