I learn hands on also, but with my background in avionics with the Air Force and 25 years as a maintenance electrician/technician in a major manufacturing facility I learned the RTFMF (Read The Full Manual First) method. I worked with equipment that could take your life if you were not careful.
I know the Breeze is not quite that drastic, but it a habit that I never break.

Army Security Agency (same as AFSS) Radio Direction Finder. Very tactical in Vietnam, but at a Taiwan Air Station, sitting in front of a green scope hour after hour, reading books mostly to break the boredom! No planes at an Air Station, just good eats!
