DJI's scanner can nab info on drones mid-flight

:(:(:(:( Thanks DJI  .....................Upon reflection it seems most of the airspace violations are later found to be Phantom pilots. Perhaps it's needed after all.

DJI folks are shooting themselves in the foot and taking us along with them.

The scanner thing is nothing new, although DJI’s trying to sell it to government agencies is. Unless signal encrypted, everything involved with the command/control and video transmissions to and from an RC aircraft can be intercepted and viewed by anyone using receivers on the correct frequencies. A simple scanner provides all the frequency info needed to initiate data reception. Such was the case with al Qaida and the Taliban until the military switched to digital encrypted comms for their drones. OTOH, DJI is making a clear statement they’ll do anything for a buck, and the allegations their systems transmit lots of data were true.

DJI’s news just gave people a reason to develop more secure systems, establishing a new revenue stream for manufacturers. What’s funny about this is DJI’s acting like their products are new, break through technologies. Everything they have done to date was done by government affiliated groups a long time ago.

I found it funny in their comments that they want all manufacturers to make it so it will work with their scanner. Can't see other companies wanting to give DJI this ability. I would be shocked in fact if they did, especially if Yuneec did it.

It would be like KFC and Popeye's saying they are going to share their recipe with each other.

At least here in Canada, a scanner like that is not legal, nor would it be likely to become legal here. Our privacy laws pertaining to personal data, even if accidentally captured is restricted and illegal

Is it this type of scanner/info that got the US Military to stop using the Chinese based products? As well as the on-board electronics etc.

Yes indeed it is. They were worried about the data collection by a foreign entity. That was my first clue that this company likes to track you.
