Gatwick flights suspended after reports of drones over runway

The reason for the airport shut down is highly suspect but the aftermath is going to be widespread and heavy handed. It won’t be limited to the U.K.

If a lie & truth were told simultaneously; the lie would travel the globe 10 Fold before the Truth completed once. People feed on gossip, fear, panic, anger and pain... lies manipulate the public and people eargerly accept a lie and question the truth. Political agenda is to trigger the lies to obtain the objective not reachable with truth and the art of deception to continue the lies while the truth fades.

The lack of logic & fact within this airport ordeal will fade and the essence of drones equating to anger & danger will be all that’s carried forward to the voters.

This is what an expert had to say. It doesn't fit the two people arrested profile.
Ex-Army captain Richard Gill, CEO of dronedefence.co.uk, said the technical know-how used suggested whoever is behind it could be educated to PhD level.

Mr Gill said: “Perhaps we are dealing with a person who just wants to do it to show how clever they are.

“He or she is just causing **** because they can and they want to test their limits. It’s the thrill of getting away with it.

“To have evaded police radar for so long suggests some serious capability.

“For example, if they have adapted a drone and put a 3G card to fly it through phone-waves rather than radio waves to avoid capture they would need a masters degree or a PhD.

“That’s the level they would have to be at to reconfigure the electronics and retune the radios then reintegrate everything into the drone.”

It's not a window fitter from Crawley then:)
which could point to something the Authorities can't deal with. Let's hope it's not a sledgehammer response in a total ban! Since the pair are innocent, it's back to the drawing board.

And there's the rub. If they did bring in a total ban, it wouldn't stop incidents like this from happening. If you can read, anyone can learn how to build a drone. There are already laws/rules pertaining to flying near airports, it didn't stop this 'alleged' incident from happening. There are laws pertaining to drinking and driving, and yet people still do it. So we should just ban all cars then?

Oh well, I was so looking forward to seeing pictures of those drones as well......

If it was industrial sized drones, there can’t be that many owners/operators from which to contact. Truly makes one wonder if the government is doing it to pad its case for even more and tighter restrictions on sUAS operators.

It is rather odd there is only one night time video and it doesn’t show squat.

I do feel for those stranded and put out by the closing of Gatwick. Airports are not conducive to comfort and pleasantries after being there just a few hours, much less many hours or days. Hoping for a swift end to this ballyhoo.

If they are caught and convicted jail is inappropriate. They should be strung up spread eagle in public and have their drone launched into their unmentionables.
I agree I had said to my dad it could be the government doing this to make a case to tighten the laws now they had a cobra meeting or so they said so this means the good guys will be getting hit with the bad stick so could mean tighter license laws that's still to be started and it's just another money spinner for the greedy government as it is and with the drones disappearing then re appearing sounds like a battery change and they have a man and woman in custody so 2 drones well let's hope they get publicly named as this could all be a roose

A DfT spokesman added: "The drones at Gatwick have been flown illegally. The government changed the law this year to make it illegal to fly drones within 1,000m of an airport or above 400ft. The law couldn't be any more clear."

From that article, specifically the quote above, I do still have some tiny hope that the powers that be will use this episode to learn the right lesson - ie strengthen airport anti-UAV defences rather than make the drone laws even more punishing and restrictive. Is that hopelessly naive / optimistic ?

Governments have a habit of overacting, look at Dangerous dog act, they are still breeding illegal dogs, drones seem to be an easy target, people are always being approached by angry people. This doesn't improve relations. I'm not sure of the photos it could be Fake news!

Taken from the local newspaper

It was revealed the window fitter used to 'like' posts on the Hastings Model Flying Club Facebook page, as well commenting "the quality of the kits are amazing" and "I look forward to dealing with them in the new year" while reviewing drone company Vifly.

So does that mean their going to troll nearby people's FB and if you comment or seen flying your drone then come knocking on your door bearing in mind he used to fly RC helicopters and planes and is a ex gunner for the army so you think he would no right from wrong so I think got the wrong couple

I never saw this posted yet and still no picture of the UAV in question

"The police also told local reporters at a news briefing on Sunday at Gatwick that they had recovered a “damaged” drone near the airport and that it would be forensically examined. No further details were immediately available. "

Yes if you go to the daily record online newspaper it's a Scottish daily it also shows their picture
A picture of the drone or the alleged drone pilot? I've visited the Daily Record site and can find absolutely nothing on this story. Put a link in would you?

The BBC have reported that a crashed drone has been found near the airport.... No pictures of the drone though. Of course, this 'crashed' drone could've come from anywhere, including being planted by the authorities.......

In an earlier post of mine I quoted a so called expert, that they would of had to of been educated to PhD or masters, he went on to talk about using mobile networks to avoid jamming etc, seems almost he was admitting it was a sophisticated operation, not hobbyist. It seemed he knew the systems needed to do it.

Yes but the hobbies will get the backlash always the bloody same in this *** country

Thanks for the link. LOL! I don't think his model RC helicopter in any way whatsoever relates to an industrial type drone. And why did the article go on to mention the value of his house, what has that got to do with this incident? The press are truly appalling, they really are. And it is clear from that article right from the start, that this bloke had nothing to do with it.

However this all plays out, I think the one and only solution to events like this happening is the use of technology around major airports that can down a drone/RC aircraft. More regulation for the law abiding will do absolutely nothing. Whether all this has been staged to make the implementation of counter drone technology actually happen and contracts awarded to interested parties, is open to debate. I don't have a problem with counter drone/RC technology being deployed at airports. What concerns me about counter drone technology is, who will be authorised to use it and how easy will it be for any Tom, ****, or Harry to get their hands on it and abuse it?

I'll use drinking and driving as an example of how more regulation/tighter rules don't work. There is a legal limit for the amount of alcohol you can have in your bloodstream whilst driving. Get caught even slightly above that limit and the penalties can be truly life changing in the UK (and they should be) including jail time. Yet time and time again the authorities natural reaction to try and stop people drinking and driving is to lower the legal limit. While that may have an effect on some accident statistics, it isn't going to stop the people that habitually drive while absolutely steaming drunk, it just doesn't! Any legal limit means nothing to them......

Yes totally agree why say how much his house is that's nothing to do with anyone and for the drink limit am sorry but it should be a zero tolerance no alcohol in your system
