LiPo battery care

There have been some comments and questions recently about proper care of LiPo batteries such as the ones we use in our Typhoon H aircraft. This article does a very good job of providing insight into these batteries and guidance on maintenance of them.

There are a number of good chargers available that will not only charge them and also show voltage for each cell and discharge them to proper voltage levels. Perhaps some of our more seasoned pilots will share their choices of chargers.

A Guide to Understanding LiPo Batteries

Great article, tons of useful information. I'll be investing in a aftermarket charger/discharger ASAP.

Just bought a used typhoon h pro on Thursday. Nice set up. However, I have a concern about the batteries. Is this normal or is this what is considered swelling on these batteries? I haven’t seen a new one so I’m not sure. The sides do not appear to be swollen but I haven’t seen a battery with a “soft surface” before. Any thoughts?

That is quite normal for those batteries as long as it remains soft and does not bind when installing or extracting the battery.

Are you using a third party charger that allows you to place the batteries at storage levels when not in use, and possibly also measure the IR (internal resistance) of each cell?

No I only have the oem charger that came with it. After reading the article at the top of this thread, I have started looking into getting one. Yuneecskins has a few options and also adapter cables that look promising. In one of their items it shows a picture of a normal battery and a bad battery and mine looks like the later.

These are a couple of batteries that I own. IMG_2335.jpeg
The one on the left is a Venom battery that is puffy to the point that it binds a bit when installing/removing it in the aircraft. The soft plastic area is hard to the touch and takes considerable force to mash it in a bit. I keep it at storage capacity and only use it for ground based testing.

The one on the right is a Power4 battery that came with my H480 in 2018. It has had a slight puffiness the entire time, and is still a serviceable flight battery. Due to age its flight time is down to about 80% of when it was new. It does not bind in the aircraft and the puffiness is soft and only takes light pressure to push it in.

Not knowing the history of the batteries I would advise buying a couple new ones along with a good third party charger.

The OEM charger can be adapted to be used as is or with a third party charger interchangeably. These are two that I modified for different chargers.

Thanks for the assistance, it’s been very helpful. I have 3 batteries ordered, 1 oem battery and 2 3rd party 8000mah from Yuneec skins. Should be here in a few days. Will also order 3rd party charger and adapter cables in the next few days.
